Spring 2019
As the state eBird lists passes the 503 mark, a group of local birders who also happen to be event producers start to ask, "so... why not a Boston Birding Festival?"
Summer 2019
Market research begins. We have conversations with other festivals, environmental and conservation leaders, bird clubs, sponsors, and more. Budgeting and program planning gears up. Fiscal sponsor secured, venue selected.... we're getting excited.
FALL 2019
"Science" magazine publishes a devasting report on the state of birds, dwindling populations and the loss of biodiversity—1 in 4 birds in North America has disappeared in the last 50 years.
SPRING/SUMMER 2020
Covid strikes, making large in-person gatherings impossible. Meanwhile, hate and authoritarian extremism grow and creates profound unrest. The murder of George Floyd shakes us to the core.
FALL/WINTER 2020
By September, the US records over 675,000 Covid deaths. All of us lose friends and family. We isolate and wait. Birding becomes a way to to see other humans as well as birds—but cautiously.
2021
Not gonna lie. It was bleak. Where do we go from here? The election aftermath and dire climate news fuel national anxiety. What is happening here? We re-assess the possibility of normal life. Does a Festival still make sense?
2022
Covid loosens its grip and vaccines do their job. Change seems to be in the air, though not for everyone. With a sharper focus, and a more nuanced sense of purpose, the Festival team dusts itself off.
2023
Massachusetts sets a new record with 518 recorded species! We revisit our mission and goals. Baby steps. Then it becomes official. The Festival is now an MA nonprofit. Planning begins again in earnest.
We’re kicking off with small-group programming and concentrating our efforts on environmental justice, citizen science, community, and the power of collective action.
We plan to host a one day festival in 2025 and multi-day festival in and around Boston that includes walks, talks, workshops, and exhibits in 2026.
If you’d like to get involved, become a program partner, share ideas, suggest a speaker, become a Friend or sponsor, or reserve a booth—we sure would love to hear from you. Email us at hello@ bostonbirdingfestival.org.
