Join Sudbury Valley Trustees, Boxborough Birders, and the Boston Birding Festival for an evening watching Common Nighthawks!
Each year in late August, Common Nighthawks pass through Massachusetts on their southward migration—and it’s a sight you won’t want to miss. Bring a chair, insect repellent, and binoculars, and witness this captivating migration spectacle. Last year at Fifer’s Field, we counted an impressive 46 individuals soaring overhead.
Fun fact: Common Nighthawks are aerial insectivores known for their acrobatic flight as they swoop and dive to catch insects midair. With wide, gaping mouths and a hunting style unlike any other, these fascinating birds have earned colorful nicknames like “goatsucker” and “bullbat.”
Beginners welcome! We will have binoculars to lend—email your request in advance.
See you out there!

SVT’s mission is to protect natural areas and farmland for use by all people and wildlife in the 36 communities that surround the Sudbury, Assabet, and Concord Rivers. Diversity is fundamental to the health and resilience of both human society and ecological landscapes.
We care for some of this region’s most important forests, wetlands, and grasslands—natural areas that support wildlife habitat, working farms, and recreational trails. As of February 2025, SVT cares for more than 5,900 acres in 95 SVT-Owned Conservation Areas and 100 Conservation Restrictions, and we have protected more than 70 miles of trails. Since our inception, we have assisted other organizations and governmental agencies in protecting an additional 3,000 acres in the region.
Boxborough Birders is an enthusiastic group of bird watchers from Boxborough, Massachusetts and nearby towns, including Acton, Harvard, Stow, and Littleton. The group focuses primarily on local “patches” (habitats) in studying and learning about resident and migratory bird species.
The group organizes walks throughout the year, especially during spring and fall migration, and members post their observations (and often photos) from each scheduled walk to eBird as well as shares lists with group members via the Boxborough Birders Google group. In the winter, Boxborough Birders participate in the annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count as part of the Concord circle. [LINK].
