Described as “woefully under-birded” by Mass Audubon, the 580-acre Delaney Wildlife Management Area and IBA straddles the towns of Stow, Harvard and Bolton. It is an impressive landscape with an unusually diverse list—from Winter Wren and Grasshopper Sparrow to Bald Eagle, Least Bittern and Northern Goshawk, though consistent records have been sparse.
While we can’t promise target birds like these, we can go exploring this beautiful place and see what a small group of extra eyes can find and hope to get lucky.
New birders are welcome, and we have some binoculars to lend.
Spaces are limited. Free.

HUNTING SEASON
Hunting is permitted in this area, but is not common and hunters do follow safety regulations. Both hunters and birders share an interest in preserving wild places.
It is unlikely we will encounter hunters on our trip. Still, we strongly recommend wearing an orange safety vest or hat in hunting season. It’s a generally a good idea to have something orange in your birding kit. We will have a few vests to lend. If you do not have orange on, please stay close to our group.
TRAILS
This walk is easy-moderate—about 3 miles over uneven surfaces. The terrain is mostly flat with a some gently rolling hills, streams, dams, ponds, woods, Riders visit this area for its jumps and trails, and dogs have been known to be an issue. To explore this route see the All Trails map [LINK].
CHALLENGES
Please note: We may encounter leashed and off-leash dogs at this property. No restrooms or other facilties on site.
